What is exported

India is one of the largest fan markets in the world, and makers in Uttarakhand (Haridwar, Roorkee), Himachal Pradesh (Baddi), Goa, Delhi NCR, Kolkata and Hyderabad export ceiling, table, pedestal and exhaust fans. In 2025-26 India exported about US$ 80 million under HS 8414.51; the UAE led, followed by Nepal, Sri Lanka and Iraq. Energy-efficient BLDC ceiling fans are the growing segment.

Varieties, grades and forms

  • Ceiling fansInduction and energy-saving BLDC models.
  • Table, pedestal and wall fansHigh-speed and oscillating models.
  • Exhaust and ventilation fansFor kitchens, bathrooms and small workshops.

Where it is grown or made

  • UttarakhandHaridwar and Roorkee
  • Himachal Pradesh and GoaBaddi; Goa industrial estates
  • Delhi NCRNoida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad
  • West Bengal and TelanganaKolkata–Howrah; Hyderabad

Export packing

  • Ceiling fans packed knocked-down (motor, blades, rod, canopy) in one printed carton per fan.
  • Pedestal and table fans with thermocol or pulp inserts; guards and blades protected from bending.
  • Voltage, wattage, sweep size, energy label and country of origin on each carton.

Who buys abroad

  • Electrical and appliance wholesalers
  • Retail chains and hypermarkets
  • Building contractors and projects

The quality buyers ask for

Sweep and speed
Blade sweep (for example 900, 1200, 1400 mm) and rated speed in rpm
Air delivery and efficiency
Air delivery (m³/min) and service value (m³/min per W) as tested
Electrical
Voltage, frequency, power input; capacitor rating for induction motors
Safety
IEC 60335-1 and IEC 60335-2-80; insulation class and thermal protection
Materials
Aluminium or steel blades, copper winding, powder-coat finish

Certificates

  • CE marking (LVD, EMC, RoHS, ecodesign)Often askedRequired for fans sold in the EU.
  • UL 507 listingOften askedElectrical safety for fans sold in the USA.
  • SASO / SABER and Gulf energy labelsOften askedConformity and energy-efficiency rules in Saudi Arabia and some GCC states.
  • ISO 9001Often askedQuality system for OEM and distributor buyers.

Shipping, storage and shelf life

Container load

A 40-ft container typically holds about 1,500–2,500 knocked-down ceiling fans depending on carton size; pedestal fans take more space.

How it travels

Sea freight; road to Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.

Storage

Dry storage; protect cartons from crushing.

What goes on the pack and carton

  • Rating plate: voltage, frequency, wattage, sweep, model, serial number and maker.
  • Energy label where the market requires one (for example US DOE/FTC rules for ceiling fans).
  • Installation and safety instructions in the local language; country of origin.
Where to get it tested

BIS-recognised labs and NABL-accredited electrical labs test fans for safety and air delivery (search 'electrical appliances' in the NABL directory). CPRI also tests motors and appliances.

Benefits of exporting this product

Where to register

  • EEPC IndiaElectric and home appliances are listed under EEPC in Appendix 2T; take your RCMC from EEPC.eepcindia.org ↗

Quality and checks

  • Electrical safety to IEC 60335-2-80 (fans); CE (Low Voltage and EMC Directives, RoHS) for the EU; UL 507 for the USA.
  • Energy rules: EU ecodesign limits for comfort fans; US DOE efficiency standards and labelling for ceiling fans; Gulf energy-efficiency labels where required.
  • Voltage and frequency for the market (220–240 V / 50 Hz in most of Asia, Africa and Europe; 60 Hz in Saudi Arabia and the Americas).
How to start small

Ceiling and pedestal fans for Nepal, Sri Lanka, East Africa and Gulf wholesalers are the easy start. Pick a maker with IEC test reports, offer spare capacitors and a one-year warranty, and ship mixed models in one container.

Where new exporters go wrong

  • Bulky cartons — check how many fans fit a container before you quote a price.
  • 60 Hz markets get 50 Hz motors; speed and noise complaints follow.
  • Plastic blades and parts that fail heat tests in Gulf summers.

Step by step

How to export electric fans

India has one of the largest domestic fan industries and exports mainly to neighbouring countries, the Gulf and Africa. China dominates world fan exports on scale and price. Demand comes from hot climates, rising incomes and electrification in Africa and South Asia, and from energy-efficiency rules that favour BLDC fans. Openings are in energy-efficient ceiling fans, rugged pedestal fans for African markets, and private-label supply to Gulf distributors.

  1. 01Pick models

Match voltage, frequency and design taste of the market.

  2. 02Test and certify

Safety and performance reports; CE, UL or SASO as needed.

  3. 03Sample and quote

Send samples; quote FOB per container mix.

  4. 04Produce and inspect

Run-test every fan; inspect a sample before loading.

  5. 05Pack and ship

Knocked-down cartons; load tightly to avoid crushing.

  6. 06Claim benefits

RoDTEP (1.3%) and drawback on the shipping bill.

  7. 07Payment

Advance or LC; offer warranty spares in each shipment.

Questions

Questions about exporting electric fans

Are BLDC fans worth exporting?
Yes, where energy costs are high or efficiency rules apply; they also suit solar and inverter homes.
What RoDTEP applies?
All 8414 51 fan lines carry 1.3% of FOB in Appendix 4R.
Which council?
EEPC India (electric and home appliances).
Do fans need certification for Africa?
Several African countries run pre-shipment conformity programmes for electrical goods; check the destination's standards body.
How do I cut freight cost per fan?
Ship knocked-down, nest blades, and design cartons to fill the container fully.
