Sudan has no trade agreement with India. Fighting that began in April 2023 has severely disrupted the economy, banking and transport. The Indian Embassy relocated from Khartoum and operates from Port Sudan, which is also the country's only major seaport. Some trade in food, medicines and essentials continues, but the risks are high.

What it buys from India

  • Medicines
  • Rice, sugar products and other food
  • Machinery, vehicles and auto parts
  • Textiles and plastics

Import rules on their side

  • Food and medicines need clearance from Sudan's food and drug regulators; confirm current procedures with the buyer, as institutions have relocated during the conflict.
  • Imports are cleared at Port Sudan; plant products need an Indian phytosanitary certificate.
  • Payments must be handled through banking channels permitted under RBI rules; confirm with your bank before agreeing any deal.

Practical tips

  • Ship only against full advance payment received in your bank account; do not rely on LCs or credit while the conflict continues.
  • Check ECGC's current country classification and the Indian Embassy's advisories before entering talks.
  • Check sanctions lists (UN and others your bank applies) against the buyer's name; your bank may refuse payments linked to listed parties.
