Most Mauritians are of Indian origin, so Indian food, spices, clothing and festival goods have a natural market. The island imports nearly all its fuel, food and manufactured goods. Volumes are small, which suits first-time exporters testing a market.
India's first trade agreement with an African country. It gives preferential access to over 300 Indian export products, including food, agricultural products, textiles, metals, electricals, plastics and chemicals (PIB, Feb 2026). Use the CECPA certificate of origin.
What it buys from India
- Petroleum products
- Rice, spices, onions and processed food
- Medicines, cotton yarn and textiles
- Machinery, vehicles and building materials
Import rules on their side
- Food imports are cleared by the Ministry of Health's food inspectors; plants and plant products need an import permit and an Indian phytosanitary certificate.
- Labels are usually in English or French.
- Customs is handled by the Mauritius Revenue Authority; claim CECPA rates with the certificate of origin at import.
Practical tips
- Shipping is often via transhipment, so allow extra time; consolidate small orders into shared containers.
- Diwali, Maha Shivaratri and other festivals drive demand for Indian goods.
- Mauritius is also a gateway for some business with Madagascar and East Africa.
