Main ports
Tema, Takoradi, Kotoka International Airport, Accra

Ghana has no trade agreement with India. Tema port serves Ghana and landlocked Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. Indian medicines, vehicles, two-wheelers, machinery, rice and plastics are steady exports, and an Indian business community has long been active in Accra.

What it buys from India

  • Medicines and pharmaceutical products
  • Vehicles, motorcycles and auto parts
  • Machinery, electrical equipment and plastics
  • Rice and processed food

Import rules on their side

  • Food, medicines, cosmetics and medical devices must be registered with the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) before import.
  • High-risk goods are checked by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) under its conformity assessment programme.
  • Customs declarations are filed on Ghana's ICUMS single window by the Ghana Revenue Authority's Customs Division; plant products need a phytosanitary certificate.

Practical tips

  • Ask for advance payment or a confirmed LC; check ECGC cover for Ghana before giving credit.
  • If your buyer sends goods on to Burkina Faso or Mali, ask which documents the transit country needs.
  • FDA registration takes time and is usually held by the importer; agree in writing who pays for it and who owns it.
