Senegal has no trade agreement with India. Rice is a staple and much of it is imported, with India a leading supplier. Dakar port also serves landlocked Mali. Senegal uses the West African CFA franc and the ECOWAS common external tariff, and French is the business language.

What it buys from India

  • Rice
  • Medicines
  • Vehicles, motorcycles and auto parts
  • Machinery, textiles and plastics

Import rules on their side

  • Customs is run by Senegal Customs; import formalities go through the ORBUS electronic single window.
  • Medicines need authorisation from Senegal's pharmaceutical regulator; plant products need a phytosanitary certificate and are checked by the plant protection directorate.
  • Labels and documents should be in French.

Practical tips

  • Check India's current rice export policy on DGFT before quoting; Senegalese rice buyers compare prices across Asian suppliers closely.
  • Take advance payment or a confirmed LC; check ECGC cover before giving credit.
  • For cargo going on to Mali, agree who arranges the Dakar–Bamako road or rail transit.
