What is exported

Plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu (Coimbatore), Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh make induction motors, large motors, alternators and gensets. In 2025-26 India exported about US$ 902 million under HS 8501 and US$ 751 million of generating sets (HS 8502); the USA led for motors, followed by Germany and the UAE, while gensets went mainly to the UAE, France and Germany (Commerce Department data).

Varieties, grades and forms

  • Three-phase induction motors (low voltage)Squirrel-cage motors for pumps, fans, compressors and machines — the largest line.
  • High-voltage and large motorsMotors above 375 kW for industry, mining and water utilities.
  • Fractional and single-phase motorsSmall motors for appliances, fans and pumps.
  • Alternators and generatorsAC generators for gensets and wind turbines.
  • Diesel generating sets (HS 8502)Complete gensets from small portable units to large standby sets.

Where it is grown or made

  • GujaratAhmedabad, Vadodara and Rajkot
  • Tamil NaduCoimbatore — motor and pump cluster — and Chennai
  • MaharashtraMumbai, Nashik, Pune and Ahmednagar
  • Karnataka and Madhya PradeshBengaluru and Bhopal

Export packing

  • Small motors in cartons on pallets; large motors and gensets bolted on skids in heat-treated wooden crates (ISPM 15) with VCI wrap against rust.
  • Shaft ends locked against bearing damage in transit; desiccant inside crates for sea voyages.
  • Rating plate details (kW, voltage, frequency, efficiency class) on the packing list.

Who buys abroad

  • Pump, compressor and machinery makers (OEMs)
  • Electrical distributors
  • Utilities, EPC contractors and project buyers
  • Group companies of multinational motor makers

The quality buyers ask for

Standard
IEC 60034 series (ratings, efficiency classes, testing) or NEMA MG 1 for the USA
Efficiency class
IE3 or IE4 for most 0.75–1,000 kW motors in the EU (Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2019/1781); US DOE limits in 10 CFR Part 431
Rating
kW, voltage, frequency (50 or 60 Hz), poles, frame size, IP protection and insulation class
Hazardous areas
ATEX (EU) or IECEx certification for flameproof motors used in oil, gas and chemical plants
Gensets
ISO 8528 performance classes; noise and emission limits in the destination

Certificates

  • CE marking (LVD, EMC, Ecodesign)RequiredMotors and generators sold in the EU need a declaration of conformity and CE mark.
  • UL / CSA listingOften askedOften asked for by US and Canadian buyers.
  • ATEX / IECExOften askedOnly for motors used in explosive atmospheres.
  • ISO 9001Often askedQuality management system; expected by most industrial buyers.

Shipping, storage and shelf life

Container load

Palletised cartons or crates in 20-ft or 40-ft containers; large machines and gensets on flat racks or as break-bulk.

How it travels

Sea from Mundra, Hazira, Nhava Sheva and Chennai; air for urgent spares.

Storage

Dry storage; protect windings from moisture and lock shafts.

What goes on the pack and carton

  • Rating plate: maker, type, serial number, kW, voltage, current, frequency, speed, efficiency class (IE code) and IP rating.
  • CE mark and EU importer details for the EU; UKCA or CE for Great Britain.
  • Country of origin ('Made in India') on the product or its packing, as the buyer's customs require.
Where to get it tested

CPRI (Bengaluru, with regional labs) and ERDA (Vadodara) test motors and generators to IEC and Indian standards. BIS-recognised and NABL-accredited labs test efficiency; for CE and UL, use the notified body or certification body the buyer accepts.

Benefits of exporting this product

Where to register

  • EEPC India (Engineering Export Promotion Council)RCMC — electrical machinery is under EEPC.eepcindia.org ↗

Quality and checks

  • EU: IE3 or IE4 efficiency for most 0.75–1,000 kW motors under Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2019/1781, plus CE marking.
  • USA: DOE efficiency rules and, often, UL or CSA listing.
  • Motors must be rated for the buyer's grid (50 or 60 Hz, voltage).
How to start small

Start with standard low-voltage motors or alternators for pump and machinery makers and electrical distributors in the Gulf and Africa. Join EEPC, get type tests at CPRI or ERDA, and add CE documentation before approaching Europe.

Where new exporters go wrong

  • Selling IE2 motors into the EU where IE3 or IE4 is required.
  • Wrong frequency or voltage for the buyer's grid.
  • Moisture damage to windings in transit.

Step by step

How to export electric motors and generators

India has a large, competitive motor and generator industry, with multinational plants and Indian makers in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Coimbatore. China dominates world trade in small motors, and Europe and Japan lead in high-efficiency and large machines. In 2025-26 the USA was by far the largest buyer of Indian motors, followed by Germany, the UAE and France; gensets went mostly to the UAE, France and Germany (Commerce Department data). Efficiency rules are tightening (IE3 and IE4 classes), so buyers want certified efficiency. Openings are in IE3/IE4 industrial motors, motors for pumps and fans, and gensets for the Gulf and Africa.

  1. 01Pick product and standard

IEC for Europe, the Gulf and Asia; NEMA and 60 Hz for the Americas.

  2. 02Register with EEPC India

    Electrical machinery is under EEPC.

  3. 03Test efficiency and safety

Type-test at an accredited lab; prepare the CE technical file.

  4. 04Routine test every unit

No-load, insulation and run tests with a test certificate for each serial number.

  5. 05Pack and ship

Crate with VCI and desiccant; file the shipping bill.

  6. 06Ship and claim benefits

File the shipping bill on ICEGATE with the correct 8-digit HS code, declare RoDTEP and drawback, and keep the mill or test certificates with the export file.

  7. 07Get paid safely

Use an LC or documents against payment with new buyers, take ECGC cover for open-account sales, and close the export with an e-BRC once the money arrives.

Questions

Questions about exporting electric motors and generators

Do I need IE3 motors for Europe?
Yes, for most three-phase motors in the 0.75–1,000 kW range, and IE4 for some sizes, under the EU Ecodesign Regulation. Check the exact scope.
What incentives apply?
RoDTEP of 0.7% and drawback of 1.7% of FOB for motors (8501) and gensets (8502).
50 Hz or 60 Hz?
The Americas, Saudi Arabia and parts of Japan use 60 Hz; most other markets use 50 Hz. Motors must be rated for the buyer's grid.
Can I export motors as part of a pump?
Yes. A motor fitted to a pump set is classified with the pump (HS 8413); a loose motor is HS 8501.
What causes warranty claims?
Moisture in windings after sea transit, bearing damage from unlocked shafts, and wrong voltage or frequency.
