Austria has no coastline; Indian cargo usually lands at Hamburg, Koper or Trieste and travels on by rail or road. It follows EU customs, food and product rules, so a product cleared for Germany can normally be sold in Austria. Buyers are quality-focused and often buy through German wholesalers.

India–European Union Free Trade Agreement (negotiations concluded 27 January 2026)

Austria is an EU member, so the India–EU FTA will apply once it is signed and ratified. Negotiations were concluded on 27 January 2026 and the Commerce Minister said in June 2026 that signing was expected by December. Until it enters into force, normal EU duties apply. What it buys from India

  • Electrical and electronic equipment and machinery
  • Garments, footwear and leather goods
  • Vehicle parts, iron and steel products
  • Organic chemicals and medicines

Import rules on their side

  • EU rules apply: maximum pesticide residue levels for food, CE marking for machinery, toys and electrical goods, and REACH for chemicals in products.
  • Food labels must be in German. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) and the provincial food inspectors check food on the market.
  • Customs clearance can happen at the EU port of entry or in Austria; ask your buyer where the goods will be cleared so the documents match.

Practical tips

  • Quote CIF to the European port or DAP Vienna only after checking inland rail costs; many first-time exporters under-price the last leg.
  • German-language catalogues and price lists help a lot; most buyers also meet suppliers at German trade fairs such as Ambiente and Heimtextil in Frankfurt.
  • Watch the EU deforestation regulation (EUDR) for coffee, cocoa, wood, rubber and leather products, and CBAM reporting for steel and aluminium.
