What is exported
Psyllium (Plantago ovata) is a winter crop of north Gujarat, western Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, processed into husk, husk powder and seed mainly around Unjha in Mehsana district. The husk is a soluble fibre used in laxatives, fibre supplements, breakfast cereals and gluten-free baking. The USA is by far the largest buyer, followed by European and Asian supplement and food makers.
Varieties, grades and forms
- Psyllium husk, 85% to 99% purityGraded by purity; 95% and 98% are the most traded grades.
- Husk powder (40–100 mesh)Milled husk for supplements and food.
- Psyllium seedWhole seed for further processing.
- Khakha and by-productsLower-grade husk and seed meal for cattle feed.

Sea freight from Mundra and Nhava Sheva; samples and urgent lots by air from Ahmedabad.
Dry, cool and pest-free storage; husk absorbs moisture quickly.
Typically 2–3 years in sealed, lined bags.
What goes on the pack and carton

Benefits of exporting this product
- RoDTEP: 0.9% of FOB
Tariff item 1211 90 32 (husk) and 1211 90 13 (seed) (psyllium husk and psyllium seed) earns 0.9% of FOB value, with no rupee cap, as a duty credit scrip on ICEGATE (Appendix 4R). Chapter 12 lines were renumbered by the Finance Act 2025; the RoDTEP line follows your current code. Rates continue to 31 Dec 2026 (DGFT Notification 41/2026-27). Confirm your exact 8-digit line on DGFT before pricing an order.

Quality and checks
- Purity grade (85%, 95%, 98% or 99% husk), swelling volume, light extraneous matter, mesh size and moisture.
- Microbiology (Salmonella, E. coli), pesticide residues, heavy metals and aflatoxin to US Pharmacopeia or buyer specifications.
- US FDA food facility registration for the processing plant if you supply the USA.
Buy graded husk from an FDA-registered processor in Unjha and send samples with a full certificate of analysis to supplement makers and ingredient distributors. Begin with a 20-ft container of 95% or 98% husk on advance payment or LC. Since 15 September 2026, a consignment worth up to ₹3 lakh FOB does not need an RCMC (DGFT Notification 36/2026-27). Registrations that a law requires for the product still apply.
Where new exporters go wrong
- Microbial counts above the buyer limit — psyllium is often sterilised to meet them; agree on the method in advance.
- Prices swing with the Rajasthan and Gujarat crop and mandi arrivals; avoid long fixed-price contracts.
- Using an outdated 8-digit code on the shipping bill and losing RoDTEP.

Step by step
How to export psyllium (isabgol) husk and seed
India grows almost all of the world’s psyllium and is the dominant exporter of husk, powder and seed; there is no major competing origin. Demand is driven by fibre supplements, digestive-health products and the gluten-free and plant-based food trend, above all in the USA. Prices depend on the Gujarat and Rajasthan crop and on Unjha mandi stocks. Openings lie in high-purity, low-microbial and organic husk, and in finished retail fibre products.
- 01Choose the processor
Work with an FSSAI-licensed, FDA-registered Unjha processor with an in-house lab.
- 02Agree the specification
Fix purity, mesh, microbial limits, any sterilisation and the testing method with the buyer.
- 03Buy and process the crop
Buy seed at Unjha, dehusk, clean, grade and mill as ordered.
- 04Test the lot
Test purity, swell volume, microbiology, pesticides and heavy metals; issue the certificate of analysis.
- 05Book, stuff and file the shipping bill
Book the container, stuff it at the factory or a CFS, file the shipping bill on ICEGATE with the correct 8-digit code and the RoDTEP/RoSCTL declaration, and get the bill of lading.
- 06Get paid and close the file
Send the original documents through your bank (or to the buyer if paid in advance). Once the money arrives, get the e-BRC and claim RoDTEP, RoSCTL or drawback where they apply.
