Why it matters

Most countries will not clear plant products without it. A missing or wrong phyto means the shipment is held, treated, sent back or destroyed at the buyer's port.

What goes on it

  • Exporter and consignee, botanical name of the plant product
  • Quantity, packages, place of origin, port of entry
  • Additional declarations the importing country requires
  • Treatment done (fumigation, heat, cold) with date and dose

Avoid these mistakes

  • Check the buyer country's import permit and pest list first; some markets also need the farm or packhouse registered.
  • Book inspection early — the inspector must see the lot before it is stuffed.
