Algeria has no trade agreement with India. It controls imports closely to protect local industry and foreign-currency reserves. Since July 2025 importers have had to file an import forecast programme with the Ministry of Foreign Trade before their bank will handle the payment, and the rules are renewed in phases — so confirm the buyer's approval before production.
What it buys from India
- Medicines and bulk drugs
- Rice, spices and tea
- Vehicle parts, machinery and steel products
- Organic chemicals and yarn
Import rules on their side
- The importer must file an import forecast programme on the Ministry of Foreign Trade platform; banks will not domicile the import or release payment without it.
- Medicines need registration with Algeria's pharmaceutical products agency, and some medicines that are made locally cannot be imported.
- Labels must be in Arabic (French is usually added); meat needs halal certification accepted by Algeria.
Practical tips
- Payment is normally by documentary credit or documentary collection through the buyer's Algerian bank; do not ship on open account.
- Ask the buyer for proof that its import programme covers your product and HS code before you start production.
- French is the main business language; a French quotation and invoice saves time.
