The CBIC tariff shows 7.5% on fuel-dispensing, centrifugal, rotary, reciprocating, concrete and other power pumps and their parts, and 10% on hand pumps (8413 11 10, 8413 19 10, 8413 20 00) and parts of water hand pumps (8413 91 40). IGST: power-driven water pumps, concrete pumps, rotary pumps and fuel pumps are in Schedule II at 18%; hand pumps and their parts, and hydraulic pumps for tractors (8413 81 90), are in Schedule I at 5% (Notification 9/2025-Integrated Tax (Rate)). Pumps for oil and gas exploration may be exempt under a list appended to Notification 45/2025-Customs, subject to conditions. CBIC — Customs Tariff, import tariff by chapter ↗
What is imported
Process pumps, chemical and slurry pumps, metering pumps, high-pressure and specialised water pumps are imported by industries, EPC contractors and distributors. India makes most farm and domestic pumps itself, so imports lean towards engineered pumps. TradeStat shows about US$ 1,622 million of 8413 imports in 2025–26, from China, Germany, the USA, Japan, the UK and Austria.

Licences and registrations you need
- BIS (pumpsets — check)Some electric pumpsets, such as submersible and monoset pumps sold to households and farmers, are covered by Indian Standards that may be compulsory. Check the BIS list for your pump type; if covered, the foreign maker needs a BIS licence through Manak Online.manakonline.in ↗
- BIS (industrial pumps)The Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Order, 2024 was rescinded by the Ministry of Heavy Industries in January 2026 (S.O. 239(E)), so there is no general BIS certificate for machinery at present. Check the BIS list for any product-specific order before you ship.bis.gov.in ↗
What is checked at the port
- Pump type and drive (hand or power) against the declared tariff line, since both BCD and IGST change with it.
- Pump with motor: a pump imported with its motor on a common base is classified as a pump; motors shipped separately go under 8501.
- BIS mark on pumpsets that fall under a compulsory standard.
Practical tips
- Get the performance curve, material certificates for wetted parts and the test report at the duty point in the purchase order.
- Order seals, impellers and bearings with the first shipment; specialised spares can take months by sea.
Where new importers go wrong
- Declaring a power pump as a hand pump to claim 5% IGST.
- Ignoring Indian voltage and frequency — a 60 Hz pump runs slower on India's 50 Hz supply.
