IGST is 18% (Schedule II entry “Ball bearing, Roller Bearings”, Notification 9/2025-Integrated Tax (Rate)). Budget 2026–27 made no general change to 8482. A preferential rate may apply to bearings of Japanese, Korean or ASEAN origin with a valid certificate of origin. CBIC — Customs Tariff (as on 30.06.2025), import tariff by chapter ↗
What is imported
Ball, tapered, spherical, needle and cylindrical roller bearings are imported by machine builders, vehicle and pump makers, and trading houses that supply factories. Large global brands make them in many countries, and bearings are among the most counterfeited industrial goods. Buying through authorised channels matters as much as the duty.
Free under ITC(HS).
Licences and registrations you need
- BIS (QCO check)Check whether a BIS Quality Control Order covers your bearing type at the time of import; if it does, the foreign maker needs a BIS licence and the mark.bis.gov.in ↗
What is checked at the port
- Brand and part number against the invoice; Customs acts on rights-holder complaints about fakes.
- Country of origin marking — it decides any preferential rate and is often misdeclared.
- Valuation: very low prices for branded bearings invite checks.
Practical tips
- Ask the brand’s Indian office to confirm that your supplier is an authorised distributor.
- Keep the certificate of origin and packing marks consistent if you claim an FTA rate.
Where new importers go wrong
- Buying “original” branded bearings at a deep discount from an unknown trader.
- Claiming Japanese or ASEAN origin for bearings that were only repacked there.
