Get the product licences before you order
BIS, FSSAI, plant quarantine, CDSCO, WPC, Legal Metrology and EPR registrations must be in place before the goods leave the supplier.
Goods under a BIS Quality Control Order or the Compulsory Registration Scheme need a BIS licence or registration held by the foreign factory for that exact model, and the mark on the product. Check the current lists on bis.gov.in and crsbis.in.
Other regulators: FSSAI import licence for food; Plant Quarantine permit or checks for plant products and wood; CDSCO registration or licence for drugs, cosmetics and medical devices; WPC Equipment Type Approval for wireless devices; Legal Metrology registration for retail-packed goods; and CPCB EPR registration for plastic packaging, batteries and electronics.
Most of these agencies clear goods through Customs’ single window, so the licence numbers must be on hand when the bill of entry is filed. Fees are set by each regulator — check them on the regulator’s own site.
