Chile is one of the most open economies in Latin America, with a low general tariff and fast, digital customs. Indian cars, two-wheelers, medicines, chemicals and textiles are well established. Food rules are strict, especially the front-of-pack warning labels.

India–Chile Preferential Trade Agreement (expanded PTA); CEPA under negotiation

The expanded PTA gives Indian goods lower duty on a list of tariff lines. Check whether your HS code is covered and get the PTA certificate of origin through DGFT's online platform. India and Chile are negotiating a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA; terms of reference signed in May 2025). Confirm the current status on commerce.gov.in.

What it buys from India

  • Passenger cars, motorcycles and auto parts
  • Medicines and organic chemicals
  • Garments, home textiles and yarn
  • Machinery, steel products and rice

Import rules on their side

  • Plant and animal products need the requirements of the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) and an inspection at entry; Indian phytosanitary certificates must match SAG's conditions exactly.
  • Packaged food must follow Chile's food labelling law, including black "ALTO EN" warning seals for high sugar, salt, fat or calories; the regional health authority clears food imports.
  • Medicines need registration with the Public Health Institute (ISP).

Practical tips

  • Goods not covered by the PTA pay Chile's general tariff; check your HS code on the Chilean Customs site.
  • Spanish quotations help. Chilean importers often supply Peru and Bolivia too, so ask about re-export.
  • Chile is a relatively low-risk payer, but take an advance, LC or ECGC cover on the first order.
