Peru has an open trade regime with low average tariffs. Indian cars, motorcycles, medicines, chemicals and yarn sell steadily. Most imports arrive at Callao, near Lima, and the main regulators are SENASA for farm products, DIGESA for food and DIGEMID for medicines.

India–Peru Trade Agreement (under negotiation)

Talks began in 2017 and resumed in 2023. The 9th round was held in Lima on 3–5 November 2025 with progress on goods, services, rules of origin and critical minerals. No agreement is in force yet, so normal Peruvian duties apply. Confirm the current status on commerce.gov.in.

What it buys from India

  • Passenger cars, motorcycles and auto parts
  • Medicines and organic chemicals
  • Cotton and synthetic yarn and fabrics
  • Machinery and steel products

Import rules on their side

  • Plant and animal products need SENASA phytosanitary or zoosanitary import permits and inspection.
  • Processed food needs a sanitary registration with DIGESA; medicines and medical devices need registration with DIGEMID.
  • Customs is run by SUNAT; labels must be in Spanish, and packaged food carries Peru's front-of-pack warning octagons where required.

Practical tips

  • Watch for the trade agreement: if it comes into force, preferential duty will need a certificate of origin from DGFT's platform.
  • Spanish documents help. Many Peruvian buyers also import via Chilean or Panamanian distributors.
  • Ask for an advance or an LC from a new buyer; check ECGC cover before giving credit.
