The CBIC tariff shows 15% on every line of 6907 (all water-absorption bands, mosaic cubes and finishing ceramics). Budget 2025–26 (chapters 69–70) and Budget 2026–27 (chapters 67–70) made no change. IGST is 18% (Schedule II entry for 6907, Notification 9/2025-Integrated Tax (Rate)). Tiles are sold and assessed by square metre — keep the per-square-metre value consistent across invoice and packing list. CBIC — Customs Tariff, import tariff by chapter ↗
What is imported
India is one of the world's biggest tile producers, centred on Morbi in Gujarat, so tile imports are small and focused on premium designs, large slabs and designer collections. TradeStat shows about US$ 32 million of 6907 imports in 2025–26, led by Italy and Spain, with China, Malaysia and Vietnam far behind. Importers are mainly architects' suppliers, luxury tile showrooms and project contractors.
Free under ITC(HS) Schedule 1, subject to any BIS order in force.
Anti-dumping and safeguard duty
- Anti-dumping duty on glazed and unglazed porcelain/vitrified tiles (water absorption below 3%) from China, continued for five years by Notification 09/2022-Customs (ADD) dated 24 February 2022. Rates vary by Chinese producer; check the notification and any later review on CBIC and DGTR before importing from China.
Licences and registrations you need
- BIS (tiles QCO — check date)The Ceramic Tiles, Sanitary Wares and Laboratory Wares (Quality Control) Order, 2023 brings pressed ceramic tiles under IS 15622. We could not confirm its enforcement date from an official source; check the BIS list before shipping. If it is in force, the foreign factory needs a BIS licence and each box must carry the Standard Mark.bis.gov.in ↗
- Legal Metrology (LMPC)Importers of pre-packed goods for retail sale must register under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 and print the importer's name and address, MRP, net quantity, month and year of import and consumer-care details on each pack.consumeraffairs.nic.in ↗
What is checked at the port
- Water absorption and producer name — they decide the tariff line and whether anti-dumping duty applies.
- Country of origin: tiles routed through a third country to avoid anti-dumping duty are investigated.
- BIS mark and licence number if the tiles QCO is in force on the date of import.
Practical tips
- Order 5–10% extra from the same production batch; shades vary between batches and cannot be matched later.
- Insist on wooden crates or strong pallets with corner protection; breakage is the biggest loss in tile imports.
- Check a container's weight limit — tiles fill a 20-ft container by weight long before volume.
Where new importers go wrong
- Importing Chinese vitrified tiles without budgeting for anti-dumping duty.
- Comparing imported prices with Morbi prices without adding freight, duty and breakage — local tiles often win.
