The CBIC tariff shows 20% on finished appliances of 8516 (water heaters, microwave ovens, other ovens and cookers, coffee makers, toasters) and 8509 (food grinders, mixers, other appliances), and 10% on their parts (8516 90 00, 8509 90 00). From 2 February 2026, specified parts imported to make microwave ovens are exempt (S.No. 278A of Notification 45/2025-Customs, inserted by 2/2026-Customs) — this helps manufacturers, not traders of finished ovens. IGST is 18% (Schedule II entries for 8509 and 8516, Notification 9/2025-Integrated Tax (Rate)). CBIC — Customs Tariff, import tariff by chapter ↗
What is imported
Microwave ovens, air fryers, induction cooktops, coffee machines, kettles, toasters, mixers and juicers are imported by appliance brands, e-commerce sellers and retailers. TradeStat shows about US$ 551 million of 8516 and US$ 70 million of 8509 imports in 2025–26. China supplies the bulk, followed by Malaysia, the Philippines, Germany and Thailand. Compulsory BIS certification now shapes who can import: the factory must hold a licence before you ship.
Free under ITC(HS) Schedule 1, subject to BIS certification where a Quality Control Order applies.
Licences and registrations you need
- BIS (household appliances QCO)The Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2025 brings appliances under IS 302 (the Indian version of IEC 60335) into compulsory BIS certification; enforcement began on 19 March 2026. The foreign factory needs a BIS licence and each unit must carry the Standard Mark. Confirm whether your product category is listed on the BIS site.manakonline.in ↗
- CPCB (EPR — e-waste)Many electrical and electronic household items are listed in Schedule I of the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022. If yours is, register as a producer on the CPCB e-waste EPR portal before import.eprewastecpcb.in ↗
- Legal Metrology (LMPC)Importers of pre-packed goods for retail sale must register under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 and print the importer's name and address, MRP, net quantity, month and year of import and consumer-care details on each pack.consumeraffairs.nic.in ↗
What is checked at the port
- BIS Standard Mark and licence number (CM/L-number) on the product and packing.
- Indian plug type, 230 V rating and Legal Metrology declarations on the retail box.
- EPR registration for listed e-waste items and plastic packaging.
Practical tips
- Ask for the factory's BIS licence and check it on the BIS website before you pay the deposit.
- Order a small first batch and test it under Indian voltage swings before scaling up.
- Plan service: buyers expect a warranty and spare parts in India.
Where new importers go wrong
- Shipping from a factory whose BIS licence covers a different model or brand; customs holds the consignment.
- Declaring complete appliances as parts to pay 10% instead of 20%.
