Switzerland is not in the EU, but its product rules are closely aligned with EU rules. It buys Indian gems and jewellery, organic chemicals, medicines, garments and machinery parts. Switzerland abolished customs duties on industrial goods from January 2024, so TEPA matters most for processed farm and food products.

India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA)

TEPA between India and the EFTA states (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) was signed in March 2024 and took effect on 1 October 2025. EFTA offers market access on 92.2% of its tariff lines, covering 99.6% of India’s exports, including all non-agricultural products and concessions on processed farm products. Claim it with a TEPA certificate of origin from DGFT.

What it buys from India

  • Gems, jewellery and precious metals
  • Organic chemicals and medicines
  • Garments, home textiles and machinery parts

Import rules on their side

  • Food must meet Swiss food law, overseen by the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO); residue limits are close to EU levels. Labels need at least one official language (German, French or Italian).
  • Industrial goods enter duty-free but still need conformity with Swiss technical rules, which largely mirror EU CE requirements.
  • Clearance is handled by the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS). VAT is charged on imports even when duty is zero.

Practical tips

  • Switzerland is landlocked; sea cargo usually lands at Rotterdam, Antwerp or Genoa and moves on by rail, road or Rhine barge.
  • Swiss buyers pay well for quality, organic and fair-trade credentials, and expect exact delivery dates.
  • Check the TEPA product-specific rules of origin before quoting a duty-free price for food items.
