Myanmar shares a land border with India’s north-east and buys Indian medicines, sugar, iron and steel, machinery and vehicles. Most imports need an import licence issued by Myanmar’s Ministry of Commerce, and foreign-exchange rules can delay payments. Political instability since 2021 means a new exporter should check the bank route carefully.

ASEAN–India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA)

Myanmar is an ASEAN member, so Indian goods on its tariff-reduction lists enter at a lower or zero duty when they carry an AITIGA certificate of origin (Form AI), issued online through DGFT’s certificate-of-origin platform. A review to upgrade AITIGA was still under negotiation in October 2026 (15th Joint Committee, Jakarta). Check the duty for your HS code before quoting a price.

What it buys from India

  • Medicines and pharmaceutical products
  • Sugar and food products
  • Iron and steel, machinery, vehicles and electrical goods

Import rules on their side

  • Most goods need an import licence issued online by Myanmar’s Ministry of Commerce before shipment; ask the buyer for a copy.
  • Medicines and food must be registered with Myanmar’s Department of Food and Drug Administration through the importer.
  • Claim AITIGA duty rates with a Form AI certificate of origin from DGFT.

Practical tips

  • Some Myanmar entities are under US, EU or UK sanctions. Screen the buyer and its bank, and agree the payment route with your Indian bank first.
  • Take advance payment or a confirmed LC; foreign-exchange shortages can hold up payments from Myanmar.
  • Land-border trade through Moreh and Zokhawthar is affected by local security conditions; check the current situation before planning a road shipment.
