Tariff rates are 45% for extra virgin, virgin and other virgin olive oil (1509 20, 30, 40) and 40% for other olive oil (1509 90). Notification 45/2025-Customs lowers this to 35% for olive oil that is crude and edible grade (S. No. 43) and 40% for refined edible grade (S. No. 45). Which entry applies to your grade is decided at assessment, so confirm with your customs broker. The September 2026 edible oil cut (31/2026-Customs) was for soybean, palm and sunflower oil; we did not find a change for olive oil, but check the current rate on ICEGATE. IGST on olive oil is 5% (Schedule I, notification 9/2025-Integrated Tax (Rate)). CBIC — Notification 45/2025-Customs (effective duty rates), 24 Oct 2025, as amended ↗

What is imported

Olive oil is a small, premium edible oil in India, sold in bottles and tins for cooking and personal care. Imports under 1509 were about US$ 37 million in FY 2025-26 (TradeStat), with Spain supplying 89% and Italy 7%. Many brands import in bulk and pack in India; others import ready retail packs.

Import policy · Free to import

Free under ITC(HS) Schedule 1, subject to FSSAI import clearance and labelling rules.

Licences and registrations you need

  • FSSAICentral licence for food importers (FoSCoS), then a No Objection Certificate for each consignment through FICS at the port.fics.fssai.gov.in ↗
  • Legal Metrology (Consumer Affairs)Importer registration under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules if you import or sell retail packs.consumeraffairs.nic.in ↗

What is checked at the port

  • FSSAI tests against the olive oil standard (acidity, peroxide value, purity) to catch blending with cheaper oils.
  • Label check: grade name, importer details, FSSAI licence number, best-before date.
  • Customs checks the declared grade against the classification claimed.

Practical tips

  • Ask for a lab analysis of the exact lot (acidity, peroxide, UV absorbance) and keep it for FSSAI.
  • Allow enough shelf life; FSSAI looks at remaining shelf life at import.

Where new importers go wrong

  • Labelling pomace or blended oil as extra virgin — FSSAI treats this as misbranding.
  • Pricing at 35% when the oil is assessed at the 40% refined rate.
