What is checked at the port
- Pre-shipment inspection certificate and radiation checks at the port.
- Grade and contamination check (plastic, rubber, iron attachments, moisture) against the declared ISRI grade.
- Valuation check against declared grade and international scrap prices.
Practical tips
- Specify the ISRI grade (for example Tense, Taint/Tabor, Zorba) and the maximum free iron and moisture.
- Shredded scrap clears at more ports than unshredded scrap — plan the port before you buy.
Where new importers go wrong
- Containers with hidden contaminants or closed containers (cylinders, sealed tanks) that fail inspection.
- Paying advance to an unknown scrap trader without inspection — a common fraud route.
