Georgia has no trade agreement with India, but its import duties are low and customs is simple. Its Black Sea ports at Poti and Batumi are a gateway to Armenia, Azerbaijan and Central Asia. Because Georgia has a deep trade agreement with the EU, many of its food and product rules follow EU standards.
What it buys from India
- Medicines and pharmaceutical products
- Rice, tea and spices
- Machinery, vehicle parts and electrical equipment
- Textiles, ceramic products and chemicals
Import rules on their side
- Food, plant and animal products are controlled by Georgia's National Food Agency; plant products need an Indian phytosanitary certificate.
- Medicines need registration or recognition under Georgian rules before sale.
- Customs is run by the Revenue Service; labels should carry Georgian.
Practical tips
- Georgian importers often supply Armenia and Azerbaijan too; ask about onward markets and their labelling needs.
- Sea freight usually goes via a Mediterranean or Turkish transhipment port; check transit time with your forwarder.
- Ask for an advance or an LC on the first order; check ECGC cover before giving credit.
