Kazakhstan is landlocked and large, with an oil-based economy. Indian goods reach it by sea to Iran and then by rail or road, through the International North–South Transport Corridor, or by sea to China and then by rail. As an EAEU member it follows the union's customs tariff and technical regulations, so one certificate covers all EAEU countries.
Kazakhstan is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union with Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Russia. India and the EAEU signed terms of reference for FTA negotiations on 20 August 2025. Until an agreement is in force, the EAEU's common customs tariff applies. Confirm the current status on commerce.gov.in.
What it buys from India
- Medicines and pharmaceutical products
- Tea, coffee, rice and processed food
- Machinery, electrical equipment and mobile phones
- Garments, textiles and chemicals
Import rules on their side
- Many products need EAEU conformity documents (a certificate or declaration of conformity and the EAC mark) under the union's technical regulations.
- Medicines need registration under EAEU or Kazakh national procedures; food must meet EAEU food-safety regulations and carry labels in Kazakh and Russian.
- Customs is run by Kazakhstan's State Revenue Committee; plant products need an Indian phytosanitary certificate and quarantine checks.
Practical tips
- Ask your forwarder to compare the Iran/INSTC route with the China rail route; transit time and cost vary a lot.
- Russian is the main business language; Russian-language catalogues and contracts help.
- If the route passes through Iran or Russia, check with your bank and freight insurer about sanctions-related restrictions before you commit.
