Export pricing mistakes that cost first-timers money

The most common ways a ‘profitable’ export order turns into a loss — and how to avoid each one.

01Quoting the wrong Incoterm

A CIF price quoted with FOB costs leaves you paying freight and insurance out of margin. Write the Incoterm and named place on every quote, and price each cost up to that point.

02Forgetting small costs

Export packing, pallets, certificates, testing, CFS charges, bank charges, courier of documents and detention when a truck waits all add up on small orders.

03Counting on incentives

RoDTEP and drawback rates are set and changed by notification, and claims take time. Treat them as a bonus, not as part of your price.

04Exchange rate and validity

Quote with a validity date and a conservative exchange rate. For bigger orders, ask your bank about a forward contract to lock the rate.

  • Matching the cheapest competitor on your first order leaves no room for a single mistake.
